About The Artist

Water and music have a strong effect on me.

 

My parents are from Hawaii and Maine. I was raised in Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay and I spent a large part of my childhood in Hawaii. I have worked and lived on an Island in Maine and I have commuted by boat to work on an Island in the Puget Sound. I pay close attention to ideas inspired by water, fluid motion, light and color. What I make is also influenced by my exposure to the efforts of various musicians, writers and artist. I majored in Guitar and Composition at Berklee College of Music and the visual motifs in my work are sometimes arranged and composed using concepts borrowed from my understanding of music theory and rhythm.

 

Currently I am painting on sculpted surfaces fashioned out of furniture grade plywood, Kevlar, carbon fiber and velvet. When creating art I use pencils and a laptop, sable brushes and industrial HVLP spray guns, adhesive vinyl and acrylic paint. Shop tools such as hand saws, block planes and chisels and power tools like table saws, routers, pneumatic nail guns are important to my specific process of making art.  

 

In addition to my studio works, I have also created large art works in public areas such as the lobby of the Sears Tower. My objective for the Sears Tower project was to create site-specific art works that would acknowledge the basic creative components of the building; simple geometric shapes, rhythm, repetition and augmentation. For this and the installations at the Olympia Center I used adhesive vinyl applied to glass. 

 

Somehow my experiences with water and music are significantly linked to my subconscious. I find it useful to define art as a negotiated exchange of information. Often an exchange of information starts between the artist’s conscience and subconscious. This exchange can happen while working on ones art but it is not limited to the actions in the studio. For me, the most successful art is the result of sustained thought, focused effort and an alert respect for intuitive prompts.
