FRANK CONNET

Artist's Statement

This work is electroplated copper. Working with a soft malleable wire, I'm able to control the linear element of the piece, drawing or weaving with wire. By selectively electroplating areas during the construction I'm able to gradually build up areas, stabilizing and freezing the form, and making the foundation for the next layer of growth. Because electroplating is inexact and difficult to control technique, I'm also responding to unexpected variables in texture, weight and surface. These chance elements bring a sometimes appreciated, sometimes vexing, tension to the process.   I'm interested in imagining the processes of cellular division, crystalline growth and sedimentary deposits; The ways in which the natural world surges forth, builds upon itself, then collapses and spalls apart. I work intuitively and informally, letting the work unfold as naturally as possible.
